Growing up in a small town, I was so used to living in a quiet place that I thought I could never live in a big city, let alone move half way around the world. Surprisingly, I quickly adapted to life here and fell in love with the fast pace of living.
What is the difference?
Transport
Public transport in Hong Kong is very fast and convenient. There are the buses, trains, trams, taxis, boats etc running regularly, therefore you do not need a car if you are living in inside the city. Coming from a small town, I rarely used the buses, and relied heavily on my car to get around.
Entertainment
One big advantages of living in Hong Kong is there is always something to do. In my home town, most shops would close around 5 pm. In Hong Kong, most shops and restaurants close around 10 or 11 pm or later. With many different restaurants catering for different needs and taste, there is always somewhere to eat.
Social
I have met many different kinds of people, since making the move to Hong Kong. As an Expat I think it is quite easy to meet new friends. There is a big Expat community here. In addition to there being a large Expat community most of the local people here are super friendly and I have many local friends too. Having friends from different places might mean eventually having to say goodbye — but the bonds that you make, over time will stay forever. No matter where in the world you are.
Housing
Hong Kong is very expensive compared to living in the UK and space is super small. Most people, rent rather than buy however even renting can be expensive. Down sizing from a large detached house and garden to a small apartment can take some time to adjust to however with time, you can adjust.
So which do I prefer?
Both! Both have there advantages and disadvantages. I love being in a big city and I love returning home and spending time in a more relaxed and slower pace of life.
