Communication cards can help children who have Autism and/or Selective Mutism to start the process of communicating without the added stress of having to verbally communicate. They can be the building blocks to help them to start to communicate verbally. As children grow older they may out grow the printable communication cards and start to communicate verbally. This should be our goal as a parents, teachers or professionals. However some children may find comfort in the communication cards and maybe they only way they will communicate. This also should be encouraged. Every child is different and will progress differently. The aim to encourage them to communicate their thoughts and feelings the best way they can.

These printable communication cards are perfect for children who are non-verbal or struggle with speaking at times e.g. Autism, Selective Mutism, Learning Disabilities, and/or other communication difficulties.. communication cards can cover a range of needs and wants e.g. can I go to the toilet, yes/no/I don’t know, emotions, feeling unwell, etc. and can help to take away the inital anxiety feelings that some children may have when communicating in envrionments such as school. These cards were made by an Occupational Therapist and mum of a Selective mute child with support of teachers and speech and language therapists. They are not intended as medical advice but informational purposes only.
How to create a communication lanyard:
1. Download the PDF document
2. Print off the pages
3. Cut out the cards
4. Laminate the cards
5. Hole punch
6. Attach to a keyring or lanyard
Alternately you can laminate and use them as single cards.
