This is a post I had no intention to write, but recently a horrible act of cruelty happened not far from where we lived and brought back some horrible memories. Four dogs died after being poisoned and three other dogs were in a serious condition. The aim of this post is to raise awareness to other expats who are thinking to bring their pets over to Hong Kong from their home country.
A few weeks after we arrived in Hong Kong, our little Jack Russell joined us to commence her new life here.
Unfortunately her life in Hong Kong was short. Around a year after joining us , she was poisoned.
It happened one early morning, as my dog was playing outside she came across a bone and started chewing it. My husband saw and very quickly tried to get it out of her mouth but within minutes she became sick. We rushed her to the vets who had to resuscitate her. They managed to stabilize her however her liver had become badly damaged. With treatment she started making some progress and was told that she should make a full recovery. After a few days she was allowed to came home.
Two days after arriving home, she past away. My heart was broken. The cruel person who put the poison outside our home didn’t just take away our dog but part of me went that day. She was our first family dog, we brought her to Hong Kong for a better life, unfortunately we failed her.
Although this is a sad story for us, I hope to raise awareness that dog posing is common in Hong Kong and can happen to any dog. If you are thinking to bring a dog over please keep this in mind.
To give this story a happy ending, we now have a gorgeous rescue dog who we love and adore very much, but the pain of losing our first dog will never leave us.
